All Art Deco
All you need to know about Art Deco and the Art Deco era
Welcome to All Art Deco
The Art Deco period, as far as design is concerned, is one of the most, if not the most exciting in the history of the world. Its impact was dramatic, far ranging and cannot be overestimated. It was an exciting time whose legacy lives on.
Most people use the Internet for information and that is what we intend to provide on this website. Eventually we will be putting a few pieces up for sale and hopefully providing links to everything you could possibly want Art Deco wise. (After all websites cost money and it would be nice to earn a few pennies to cover overheads such as web hosting fees etc.). However, for now, we are concentrating on putting together the names and the places etc. that you may or may not have heard about, that essentially made this incredible era the time that it was – the age of the Designer!
Whilst I have enjoyed reading every Art Deco book I could lay my grubby little hands on I sometimes found them rather dry and highbrow and tended to devote most of my time drooling over the wonderful pictures – a lot in black and white unfortunately. On this site we have attempted to give the era the feel of the fantastically exciting time that it was.
Let me ask you something. When you have just survived the greatest conflagration, the biggest abomination the world has ever known, what do you do?
You go crazy that’s what! When the big guns go quiet – it’s party time, (F. Scott Fitzgerald described 1925 as ‘The Summer of a Thousand Parties’).
It was a time of ‘Flappers’ and ‘sinvitations’ and ‘absolute decadence darling’ (or is that ‘decodence’?), and ‘...anything goes’. However it could not last forever, as ‘The Bright Young Things’ awoke (probably hung-over) the world was sliding toward the slump that was to be known as ‘The Great Depression’. Furthermore, the dark storm clouds of war were gathering over Europe toward the end of the Thirties, W. H. Auden’s “...Low dishonest decade”.
Add into the mix stunning original designs, prohibition, speak-easies, the new pictures houses where you could see movies, gangsters, votes for women, the ‘machine age’ the emergence of airlines, new music like Ragtime and Jazz and on and on…
If you already know and love Art Deco then you will probably know what to expect, just dive right in.
If you are new then you may want to start by reading a little about the era. When it started? When it ended? Where the name came from? These sorts of things and more.
Whatever you are after concerning Art Deco, you will find it here. We promise!
Incidentally, this is (will always be - it is such a vast subject), a work in progress. If you have any comments, additions, errors to point out, advice etc. they will always be welcome. We look forward to hearing from you.
Bernard Penny.
